"IDC Says Asian PC Market Returns to Pre-Crisis Levels"

February 19, 1999 (HONG KONG) -- Asia-Pacific shipments of personal computers in the fourth quarter of 1998 increased 7 percent on a year-on-year basis and rose 11 percent from the third quarter, according to International Data Corp. (IDC). IDC said that the results signal a rebound in many regional markets as shipments increased annually for the first time in 1998. Total regional PC shipments reached 2.89 million units in the fourth quarter of 1998, or the highest total ever for the region.

IDC explained that the worst appears to be over, following a year of economic, social and political turmoil. In 1999, IDC projects that the regional market will recover from the poor performance in 1998, as annual shipment growth is expected to exceed 14 percent.

"With the fourth quarter results, there is reason for guarded optimism looking toward 1999," said Kitty Fok, research manager at IDC Asia/Pacific.
