AFTER THE BELL - Applied Graphics off
NEW YORK, Feb. 18 (Reuters) - Shares of Applied Graphics Technologies Inc. edged lower in after hours trade Thursday after it announced fourth quarter results that fell short of Wall Street's expectations.

Applied Graphics shares fell 1/4 to 9-1/4 from a close of 9-1/2 during after-hours trade on the Instinet Electronic Trading System.

Excluding restructuring and one-time items, the provider of digital asset management services reported earnings of $0.16 per share, versus $0.19, from a year-earlier.

Analysts' projected the New York company to earn $0.21 per share, according to First Call Corp.

Applied Graphics simultaneously announced job cuts and consolidation of facilities in response to lower-than-expected fourth quarter results.

Meanwhile, shares of telecommunications equipment maker Ciena Corp. (Nasdaq:CIEN - news) rose to 21-3/4 from a close of 20-7/8 following the announcement of its first quarter results.

Linthicum, Md.-based Ciena, earned $2.3 million, or $0.02 per share, beating market expectations for a loss of a cent, as polled by First Call. In the comparable year-earlier quarter, the company earned $39.69 million, or $0.37 per share.

Shares of Total Renal Care Holdings Inc (NYSE:TRL - news) reversed their downward slide by inching up to 9-1/8 from a close of 8-3/4. They were the biggest percentage loser on the New York Stock Exchange Thursday afternoon after it reported fourth quarter results short of market expectations.

The New York Stock Exchange said after hours session one volume was 2,016,000 versus 2,067,000 Wednesday, while session two volume was 1,959,442, compared with 5,791,647 Wednesday.

Salomon denies downgrading Microsoft

NEW YORK, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Salomon Smith Barney said it did not make any rating changes to Microsoft Corp. on Thursday, denying a report that it had downgraded the software giant.

"We did not downgrade Microsoft," a spokeswoman said.
Microsoft shares closed lower, down 4-1/4 at 145-3/4.
