I work at Northrup Grumman Norden Systems and our IT department at the behest of Advanced Programs requested an eval with the possibility of a large purchase. We don't got one yet. We buy lots and lots of SGI. I personally only buy Number Nine digital flat panel solution packs and Number Nine video cards.

RECIEVE A VCP??? They can't even get out a brochure on one!!!!

Ramin, I've been trying for weeks to obtain brochures on the new monitors and CPUs and have been told repeatedly "it takes 4 to 5 days to receive..." nobody is hearing me when I tell them it's been weeks!!! So I can appreciate your frustration.

Sincerely,

Becoming Despondent

Ramin, please give us more information. What type of system did you order, and how did you order it? I am certainly interested from early feedback from people who have bought one of the new SGI products, and any problems you have heard about. I have watched your posts over a long time, and take them seriously. (Although you should be easier on Alexis!) --JD

Well, I'm working for SGI, but I'm only giving my personal opinion anyway (I'm not an SGI spokesperson), so...

Probably more people in similar situation -- I know several people who have been promised 320s at dates that would have put the delivery before the master release.

In the Belgium launch, we announced that they would begin shipping roughly mid-February, and, AFAIK, that is also when they started shipping (perhaps earlier, not sure). There *is* quite a backlog, so I'm not sure where your machine would fit in; nor do I know authoritatively what the ramp-up curve for production looks like.

The Master Release has the same PCI slots as the Beta1 and Beta2 systems I have seen; it does have another Lithium spin than the Beta2 systems, but that wasn't unexpected (i.e. known at the official launch).

Well, the upgrade bits from Beta 1.8 OPK (aka December build) to Master Release 1.0 are now on support.sgi.com, so that isn't very credible -- Silicon Graphics doesn't seem to be 'holding back' on the software if they have it on their web site for download, AFAIK.

Also, I have not seen any crashes with the Jan 4 build ( well, not any Silicon Graphics-specific crashes ) I have used which has been around from before the official launch, even though the performance of the graphics driver is *much* better in the Master Release software.

I'm sorry I'm not outside SGI, but at least, you have *my* opinion.
