Hi Frank,

This is eerie-I was going to use the Japanese initiative to bolster my argument! While I am probably a year out of date on the specifics, my understanding is that they have abandoned their FTTH approach because of (what else) cost, and are now going with an HFC architecture. At least that was the approach being pursued a year ago by Jupiter, which is one of the largest cable operators. When I sat in on the Terayon road show recently, they mentioned Japan as one of their key growth installations, which makes it sound as though HFC is still getting traction there. Perhaps someone has more recent first-hand knowledge...?

BTW, on your other post, I don't think the Diamond Lane acquisition can be viewed as an unqualified success for them given the amount of money that was invested. The valuations on the last couple of financing rounds were higher than $125 million, so those guys didn't make any money. It is uncannily similar to the Ipsilon situation, IMHO. Shows the difficulty of competing with a company which apparently has effective access to the entire French treasury.
