Whoever owns the shares at the time of the split gets the shares. No one gets any "free" shares, and no one gets "cheated" out of any shares. If you have one share at market open, you will have 2 shares when they split. Its that simple.

edited addendum: If someone sold shares today, the new owner would get the split.
