* Taiwan's Manufacturers of CD-Rs Boosting Output
February 18, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Global interest in CD-R products is increasing rapidly, and Taiwan-based makers are boosting their output to meet the brisk demand. In 1999, worldwide demand is expected to reach at least 1.2 billion units.

The boom is already helping the performances of some of Taiwan's CD-R makers, and this trend is seen lasting into the year 2000.

Ritek Inc. and CMC Magnetics Corp., two major CD-R makers, reported output of at least 20 million units in January.

According to statistics from the Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association, worldwide demand for CD-Rs jumped to 630 million units in 1998, from 200 million units a year earlier. Ritek is optimistic about the market. It predicts that demand will reach 1.4 billion units in 2000.

CMC Magnetics registered a CD-R output of 20 million units last month, marking a seven-fold increase from the same month a year ago. According to preliminary figures, Ritek sold about 22 million units in the same month.

Both CMC Magnetics and Ritek plan to expand their operations this year.

When its new factory in northern Taiwan enters operation, CMC will have 100 production lines, or nearly double the current 54 lines. The company's monthly output is expected to reach 40 million units.

Ritek has acquired a parcel of land near its existing factory, on which it is building a new plant. The company will start operating the new plant by the end of this year, when Ritek's monthly output also will reach about 40 million units.

As you can see, people are hopping on board the CD-R train full speed ahead. Cd-R sales are experiencing the sales explosion that Iomaniacs can only DREAM about!

I just realized something. Our resident bear seems to be saying there are large profit margins on Clik! drives.

>>Its a shame none of the BIG boys wants to be associated with this little drive ;-( <<

Bundles like this are a commonly used way of getting rid of excess inventory-especiually as new models are being rolled out. Bundling older and/or slower moving products together like the e1680/Flop!, DC260/Flop!, and D400Z/Flop! is a way for PC Connection to make room for all of the brand new Digicams being rolled out as we speak, as still realize the top-line revenue that simple price cuts on the cameras alone would damage.
