Okay jach...the analogy is basically this: don't brag too much about your successes because, when you encounter failures, the braggadocio usually comes around and bites the bragger in the butt. In other words, try to strike a balance in what you do and say.

Another appropriate example would be: A person who continuously derides (makes negative comments to) a group, that have the same goals in common (such as a thread on SI), in a negative manner. That person sets himself up for a lot of abusive comments and tends to be called a “thread moron”.
