I thought it had always been an option for Microsoft to do a cleanroom implementation of Java, but I don't think doing so would be cheap -- I suspect many of their current coders are "tainted" because they've seen Sun's code. I also think if they did do an implementation, it would further validate Java, which is exactly what they DON'T want to do. Perhaps they'll buy one from outside.

OTOH, I don't think "Cool" is what the market wants, if it's just another Microsoft language -- they might as well pour the money into VB.
