I did get the feeling that the steering wheel didn't matter much but I steered more with the gas pedal than the wheel in that slop.

I know that feeling real well. I've had some truly hairy moments going down steep hills in slick mud.

For years the Toyota 4x4 was just about the only one you saw in rural Asia. The old Land Cruiser, the '70's version that looked like a box on wheels, was one of the most awesome back-country vehicles ever made. Not comfortable, but they would go anywhere and they were damned close to indestructible. They still use them here; a 20 year old Land Cruiser in decent condition will run well over $5k. The trucks are pretty good too, but I'm not so sure about the later models. They just look too damned plush, it's hard to believe you could take them into anything really sloppy.

Next weekend we're planning to run Mt. Pinatubo, at which point I will really know what I've got, and what I'll have to do to it.
