Here's some more news on IBM & Novell... IBM, Novell debut new gateway By Christine Burns Network World Fusion, 02/19/99 IBM and Novell last week released beta code for the fourth generation of their jointly developed NetWare for SAA gateway. This release provides secure Web-to-host links, stronger administrative ties with Novell Directory Services (NDS) and more support for underlying IP networks. IBM and Novell have given the gateway Secure Sockets Layer encryption. This feature allows people to use the Internet to establish secure sessions with IBM mainframe or AS/400 applications. End users must have IBM's Host On Demand Java terminal emulator running on their PCs to use this feature, which supports tn3270 and tn5250 connections. Market research firm International Data Corp. in Framingham, Mass., predicts that the Web-to-host connectivity market will balloon to $1 billion annually by 2002. "But up to this point, the lack of security has been holding back the development of Internet-based applications that can tap directly into the host systems," says Steve Holbook, Novell product marketing manager. Version 4.0 also lets administrators use NDS to configure a wider array of client machines. While previous versions supported only IBM terminal emulators, this new version lets administrators configure clients running all major emulation packages, such as those from Attachmate and Wall Data. "That means you just have to push the basic emulation package out to the desktops and you can do all the configuration centrally. It saves tons of time," says Randy Woods, network services manager at Fiserv, a financial services software developer in Orlando. Woods has configured the beta software to link hundreds of clients to six AS/400 machines on his mixed IPX and IP network. Another new gateway feature lets an administrator use the directory to set limits on the number of sessions users can establish on the mainframe over a period of time. NetWare for SAA 4.0 is the first version of the product to run on NetWare 5, which is where Version 4.0 picks up most of its improved IP support. Previous versions provided for IP links between the clients and the gateway, but enhanced IP support in this version allows multiple gateways to communicate via IP for tasks such as directory replication and load balancing. NetWare for SAA 4.0 will ship later this quarter. Pricing was not available.
