It appears that AOL user's can not chat with the outside world with the built-in AOL IM version. Here's what you need to do, I tried it and it works:

1. Download/install the free "universal" version of IM from aol.com (use your current AOL screen name to register)
2. Connect to AOL
3. Close AOL's built-in version of IM if it opens.
4. From within AOL connect to the internet via Internet/Internet Connection.
5. Open the "universal" IM application.

Geez, alotta work for AOL folks.

I have that version and use it every day. I even got the upgrade a while back. It will not handle group chat. It opens separate windows for each "buddy" online.
