Gord, from what I've read I understand that the above ground reserve og 99.99 fine gold is about 50,000 tonnes. That's somewhere around 1.6 billion ounces. I'm not sure what the volume of minted gold coins is but it's probably a small fraction of this and yearly demand.

The 50,000 tonnes by the way would be worth about US$463,000,000,000 at current prices, a number that Gates may achieve if the Internet drives computer usage to 2 billion units in the next 10 years. That'll make Buffett look like a piker.
