Alright now I've got the pattern down as this is the third time I've seen it on an IPO. Analysts can and do publish "research" on exactly the 25th calandar day after the issue gets priced, i.e. the day before the first day of trading. Such research is the underwriters analysts hyping the stocks. So a good short term trading tactic would be to let an IPO cool off until just before the "research" and then buy in.
