Don, one day in the not too distant future. Small pizza box looking devices will hang on houses. They will provide all the telecommunication needs of a family. From the internet to cell phones, to television, to security and repairs on dishwashers or refrigerators. At the core of these devices will be processors working at fiber obtic speeds where gigahertz will only approximate the measurement. Long distance and local calls as we now know it will become meaningless. This future is only about 7 years away. And a lot of companies paradigm will need to shift. Not least of all, Microsoft.
