Seven companies dominated the storage systems scene in 1998 controlling 2/3 of the $27.7 billion storage systems market and are set to gain even greater collective market share per IDC.

The fastest growing company was EMC with a 30% increase in storage systems sales, while Hitachi experienced flat sales year over year.
