Equifax can provide a credit report on an ebay user when the user provides information on him/herserlf but it can't authenticate a user through the browser. VRSN is embedded in 99% of the browsers in the world and is very fundamental security infrastructure. Ebay is just a community and not a merchant so its not the same issue that it is if a true ecommerce site such as Amazon.com (which is a customer of VRSN) wants to be secured. Indeed, VRSN has 25 of the top 25 ecommerce sites as customers and these customers must renew every year if they want their servers to be secure. Ebay is just a rumor and may not come to fruition but there are many similar rumors involving real ecommerce sites such as Etrade. Morgan Stanley is also rumored to going to expand usage of VRSN technology to use digital certificates to authenticate Morgans outbound emails to avoid potential interception.
