Equifax can provide a credit report on an e*bay user when the user provides information on him/herserlf but it can't authenticate a user through the browser. VRSN is embedded in 99% of the browsers in the world and is very fundamental security infrastructure. E*bay is just a community and not a merchant so its not the same issue that it is if a true e*commerce site such as Amazon.com (which is a customer of VRSN) wants to be secured. Indeed, VRSN has 25 of the top 25 e*commerce sites as customers and these customers must renew every year if they want their servers to be secure. E*bay is just a rumor and may not come to fruition but there are many similar rumors involving real e*commerce sites such as E*trade. Morgan Stanley is also rumored to going to expand usage of VRSN technology to use digital certificates to authenticate Morgans outbound e*mails to avoid potential interception.
