Copy of a post from the Nortel Yahoo thread re Nortel's Succession Telephony Platform - This is Nortel's plan for using all those expensive TDM switches for IP switching.

I'm not sure if this is the reason for the recent upswing in price, but the announcement on Tuesday regarding the new
SUCCESSION netowrk is a big one.

SUCCESSION will allow all NT carrier customers (RBOCS, CLECS, IECS, etc) to transition to a packet-based world without
having to scrap their existing equipment. In essence, it's a new DMS that sits on an ATM fabric. TDM trunk lines and ATM
broadband fiber. Switching and routing. Highly reliable voice and data. Fiber and copper. And all it requires, is an upgrade to
the DMS switching core and new peripherals to terminate the ATM links. The rest is unchanged... so all the billions of dollars
that have already been invested in equipment that generates the biggest slice of the revenues for these companies is not
wasted. This will allow carriers to compete directly with ISPs. It will also allow them to move more and more of their traffic to the
packet-based side as demand continues to increase.

This is a solution that is relatively cheap when compared to a CSCO solution, say, that requires a carrier to forklift everything
out that already works in order to put in place something that won't provide either the existing features or the expected high
reliability. Which solution do you think a carrier will make? If the interest they've shown is any indication, we know the answer.

And as for LU, from what we've been told, their 5ESS cannot easily be upgraded in such a manner. Maybe those 5ESS's will
have to be replaced by DMSs...

It looks like NT is in a unique position here. VO trials begin next quarter.

Phil, that's very gracious of you, but save the port until you've got dial tone. Then maybe we'll talk about webtone. <smile>

If you so choose, e-mail me those parameters and if it's something of a general nature not demanding of too much time, I'd be happy to accommodate.

Regards, Frank Coluccio

Speaking of Illuminet, see below, thanks to Eric on the CSCO thread:

"Cisco and Illuminet Team to Deliver SS7 Solution for Advanced IP Network Access"

It may be interesting for you to note that I spoke with these folks (Illuminet) last year at this time, and asked them if they had this capability. Ditto for Summa Four. Illuminet told me that they had no plans on their drawing boards at that time. Same with Summa Four (and Excel). Now they all have it. Summa Four was ultimately acquired by CSCO in the process. Internet Time. It's something else....
