Dow Jones Newswires
Optical Coating Up 13% After Positive 1Q Results
Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Optical Coating Laboratory Inc.'s (OCLI) shares rose 13% Friday after the company reported first-quarter results above analysts' expectations and predicted strong earnings and revenue growth in 1999.

The Santa Rosa, Calif., maker of thin-film coatings had operating earnings of 24 cents per diluted share, excluding unusual items, for the first quarter ended Jan. 31, it said after the market closed Thursday. An average of estimates of two analysts surveyed by First Call Corp. had predicted earnings of 19 cents a share.

Optical Coating also told analysts in a conference call it expected earnings growth of at least 20% and sales growth between 15% and 20% for the year ending Oct. 31, compared with 1998 results, excluding its MMG unit, which it has sold, analysts said.

Company officials were not immediately available for comment.

A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. analyst Dennis Moran said investors like the recent consistency of the company's earnings, having met or beaten analysts' estimates for the previous two years after some quarters of inconsistent results.

Another factor driving the shares up Friday is the company's apparent confidence in the growth of its telecommunications business, analysts said. In an alliance with Ontario-based JDS Fitel Inc., Optical Coating supplies high-performance wavelength division multiplexing components, which help expand the capacity of cable transmission of information.

"This division is starting to be a serious part of the company," Moran said. "It's a growth industry."

Optical Coating's first-quarter telecommunications revenue grew 100% from a year ago and 20% from the fourth quarter, said Hoefer & Arnett analyst Colin M. Higgins.

The company's Nasdaq-listed shares traded recently up 3 1/16, or 11.5%, at 29 5/8, on composite volume of 79,200 shares. Average daily volume is 66,950. Earlier Friday, the shares traded as high as 30 1/2.

<< Interesting that they were added. Will they be dropped after the merger? Chrysler was dropped after the Daimler merger from the S&P
500 because they were no longer a U.S. company. JDS can no longer be
considered a wholly Canadian company after the merger. Anyone have any
info on this? >>

Good question. Given the fact that JDS/UNPH will still have shares traded in Canada on the TSE and that they were just added to the
TSE 100 (why would the TSE add then drop a company that fast) I would expect them to remain on the 100. Mind you this is a guess, I don't know for sure.
