Frank, thanks for your (typical) erudite, thorough, and informative reply. One observation, which really hits home, is that the HFC architectural designs of today will not be robust enough going forward to satisfy promiscuous users.

What might be needed is a small area in which to experiment with different architectures. It would appear that Hong Kong has been serving as such an area: compact, densely populated, high tech-oriented, visionary. Hong Kong Telecom rolled out their service over a year ago, I wonder how it has evolved, and what lessons they have learned:
