Penni, I think we all have to be selfish in the pursuit of an art--or any work that is personally consuming. You are very fortunate in having a husband who knows that these weird zones happen and are important.

One very dear lover seemed to feel that he had died and gone to heaven that I didn't feel slighted or ignored when he would become engrossed in thinking about work during a quiet evening together. (His wife had felt isolated from him at such times!) Of course, I didn't feel slighted: I, too, would become engrossed. In fact, some of our lovely times were sitting on the balcony working, separately and occasionally together. Had we remained together, we probably would have been nurturing each other regularly and intensely.

I don't think that sacrifice is necessarily key to nurturance at a very level of intensity.
