The latter. And I think the reasons for your queston and the related observations are valid and quite important. But the media are not homogenous - some are slanted, whether left or right, and some are not. Some of course, are purveyors of opinion and commentary, and are known to be.

My (perhaps not perfect ) solution is always to be sure to access many sources of information from across the wide variety of media that are available. The other solution would have been to simply watch the whole case on television. This was not possible for me.

Sure the media are not always reliable, but usually they are. I was once told by a Russian expatriate the at the media in the west is the best "James Bond" the Russians could ask for.

Having done some reporting myself, I think many Americans are very lazy intellectually, and want their news spoon-fed to them in bite-sized morsels.
