Justin, re: the ENGINEERS

I agree totally with your perspective on this, but I must add one as well. Depending on the engineers one talks to, one can derive varying degrees of useful information. But in my case, my discussions with engineers are just one piece of a larger puzzle. I talk to as many people as possible when researching a business, industry or a competitor. So I agree, engineers rarely hold the whole answer to any question. But in the right setting and put in the right context, they tend to avoid the politics and give you answers from their gut.

Finally, I generally try to discuss key technological issues with engineers that I have known for a lengthy period of time and whose opinions, though not necessarily consistent with management's jargon, have proved to be insightful over the test of time.

I rarely look for answers in "consensus" opinions given by industry generalists.

Thanks,
Teflon
