I think the headline is probably true. I also think the phenomenon is limited to a very small percentage of the gay population. Neither is it exclusively a gay phenomenon. Every night in Bangkok and Pattaya reasonably aware, educated, white men line up to screw local hookers in a country with one of the highest HIV rates in the world. Many are unprotected? Russian Roulette? Denial? Very hard to say. Tragic, any way you slice it. But it shouldn't be used as ammunition against the gay community. There are self-destructive individuals on all sides of all sexual fences.

I agree with Steven completely that sexual recklessness should not be held against the gay community. On the other hand, if 68% of males engaging in receptive anal sex have no idea whether their partner is HIV negative or positive, there are important public health implications. Factual information is just that whether it is good or bad, regardless of where it falls in terms of my political positions. As I've said before, there is a whole bunch of stuff going on with low self esteem, drugs and alcohol among male homosexuals, which in my opinion is because of oppression and rejection. I think it would be nice if we were all treated equally in America, so that people didn't grow up with the result of feeling self destructive or hopeless.
