El: I'm not surprised that Faber used the word "gloat" - I don't think he likes EP very much. Did you see the time on SQUAWK when Faber kept making fun of the way EP talks??? It was the day after an earnings report, so every time Faber did the CPQ story when he got to EP's comments, he would speak with a heavy German accent. Then Haines told him that EP was going to be on Market Watch in about 20 minutes and Kernen started laughing. Faber looked very embarrassed. I think this Rosalie from CNBC was probably just "quoting" Faber.

El,
Got a local hook up to the net. However, I haven't the time to read 140 messages. Just looking at posts directed to me. Answering the light ones, but nothing heavy. Anything great or bad happening to CPQ?

The Skiing was greeeat today!!!!!! Happy to report the old legs are much better then I thought they would be. Let my 20 year old mind operate the 55 year old legs for a short time on some baaaad slopes this afternoon. Avoided all face plants and trees. Felt like I was 27 again and running wild. Well maybe not that good, but close. <GGG>

El: Faber made his "gloating" report after the Dan Niles report had tanked DELL but before the CPQ London conference. He claimed to have spoken to EP on the telephone. Rosalie Nelson was at the London conference and personally interviewed EP. She was giving a direct report of her own impression of EP's tone - like Faber she hesitated before using the word "gloating". She amplified it by words to the effect that EP/CPQ felt very good about their model.

I always thought it unlikely that Faber spoke to EP in some privileged telephone discussion. I think it more likely that he was reporting what his editor Rosalie Nelson had told him or that he listened in on her interview with EP. Rosalie, who is English, seemed a lot more informed than Faber. Remember Faber is a front man and a mouthpiece for work done behind the scenes by staff and reporters. He does some of the telephoning himself but when was the last time he spoke to a CEO - he speaks to analysts and PR people.
