"You would dispose of a nation's economic strength as defined by its technology and education, or political and military will, as a measure for determining the rapidity of its economic and monetary expansion."

Ron, wake up, it is already being squandered that's why our economy will collapse. All the assets are in the hands of plunderers who are selling this country out to whomever needs to be bribed or intimidated. You aren't a pragmatist you are a somnabulist.

"Hmmmm..... well, we'll have to disagree, I guess. I prefer the flexibility of the current system where the value of a nation's currency is determined by the economic competence and efficiency of its government and financial institutions "

The current system was initially for flexibility so we didn't have to carry gold and chickens around in our pockets (too heavy and too messy). Then it was taken off any real standard and at that point it became more and more removed from reality. Now that the system has been usurped by some elitist criminals it is no longer flexible or efficient for anyone but them.

How about being pragmatic enough to realize that any system over a period of time becomes out of balance, dysfunctional and inherently corrupt because it is based on an ideology or theory if you prefer. Introducing some pragmatic reality into finance at this point in time requires some basis on tangible assets. It is absolutely essential in order to bring this absurdity back into balance. If we then embraced the theory that tangible goods are the only monetary standard the system would become increasingly dysfunctional and again the control would by taken over by a power hungry select few. That's human nature.

The truth or solution to anything (or homeostasis)is never found in one side of a polarity, it is based on a synthesis of both. As a pendulum swings too far one way it is helpful to temporarily shift the system to the opposing choice unless you want catastrophic swings that will be out of everyone's control. A simple principle of physics. Your pragmatism better be based on universal principles not ideological musings of self-deluded "experts" whose theories are based on rationalizations for their own self-interest.

"And in its place you would create a system in which global economic expansion would be based upon the quantities of a shiny yellow metal that could be mined from the ground and controlled by wealthy financiers."

Please, please arrange that!

South Africa --- a country run either by racists or idiots --- would then be the richest country in the world --- and I could afford a cruise yacht on the Med!

Oh boy!! Rich at last!
