Hitachi Will Close PC Company
by Natalie Engler (2/16/99)
InformationWeek

After trying unsuccessfully to penetrate the PC market, Hitachi said Friday that it will roll Hitachi PC into Hitachi Data Systems, which sells enterprise servers, storage systems, and services.

Hitachi Data Systems said the move was part of its transition from a high-end platform supplier to a multiplatform-services company, which began last year. But analysts say it is more of an attempt to exit gracefully, due to PC market consolidation.

"All of the Japanese electronic manufacturers have been trying desperately to crack this market," said Steve Kleynhans, a Meta Group analyst. But "none of them have made a significant impact, except for Toshiba, which has been building notebooks for a decade." The problem is "all the other guys have tried to get into it in a big way in the last three to four years," he said. "But the market is trying to get to fewer players, not more players."

D. Swiss, Just look at their predictions for the last 4 years. Last year they predicted revenues up 17%. Close. NOT! And that was the closest they've been. I have MUCH better information. However, they are o.k. for counting what has already happened.
