I got a private message from someone who had gone broke and was suffering many consequences therefrom. J.M. Keynes said that a poor man should never gamble and that a rich man should do nothing but gamble. I am not sure that Keynes was right, though I guess he behaved according to his precepts, losing hugely in the 1929 crash.

My own advice to anyone who loses everything would be to start over again on a modest level, save money, and maybe read Silas Marner.
