The company would tell you that its focus on owning "the edge" is what ties all product areas together.

Actually, CSCO is not eating their lunch. The two companies, where they compete directly, are each taking share from the other, depending on the product line.

Curtis, spinning off palm and modem divisons won't work these days. Just look at all the stand alone modem companies are folding and even intel is losing market share to coms. For Palm, the main problem now is how to connect that to your coroporate database securely. That's a whole wireless networking system, not just a company selling handheld gadgets. Same thing for cable modems, whoever can provide a good end-to-end solutions gets the contracts.

As intel tries to cut down the functionality of nic and let its powerful cpu does the work, coms is putting arm processor onto the nics. This area of deveopment is very exciting to me and is going to really give intel the scare.

3COM management needs to do a better job of convincing Wallstreet that business is good as ever. That sharp drop we had from $47 down to $30 + change and very little reaction from our CEO tells me that 3COM gives didly squat about investors.

The management at this company does not get it. Bay Networks tied it with NT and Assend with LU. Management there knows the potential that bigger is better going into the 21st century. LU, NT and CSCO have a better chance of winning larger contracts worldwide than 3COM
can achieve on its own.

On a technical basis, I expect this stock to rally to $38 - $40 before testing $30 again and perhaps falling to the $27 1/2 level as the Nasdaq continues its desend to more reasonable levels.

Long term bullish but short term, it could be in a trading range.
