Guns (as used in defense - let's ignore their myriad sporting and hunting uses) have one very big feature going for them other than being used to inflict death. They provide a credible threat of death/injury. One thing that is sorely lacking (because it's hard to do and because police don't want to do it) is a tabulation of how many assaults were terminated by the victim showing or suggesting a gun. The credible capability to shoot an attacker does not require actually pulling a trigger. Herein lies the value of general concealed carry.
