I just finished reading YF's annual report. I understand that YF is licensed to market and distribute such brand names as Tropicana, Betty Crocker etc. in return, presumably, for a share of the profit from the sale of those brands in Canada. Given the low margins in the grocery business, this doesn't sound terribly profitable, and I guess that is why YF is now a $3 stock. But what I don't understand is why the companies that produce these brand names don't market and distribute these brands themselves, given that they are far larger entities than Yogen Fruz. Is licensing other companies to do this the norm in the grocery products business?
