Microsoft Denies 'Cool' Is Java Rival

Microsoft Corp. said it isn't positioning a future version of its Visual C++ programming language as an alternative to Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java. Mike Risse, Microsoft group product manager for developer tools, said an upgrade to Visual C++, code-named "Cool," is slated to follow the release of the company's Windows 2000 operating system. Mr. Risse said Cool would allow software programmers to take advantage of new features in Windows 2000, which Microsoft has said it expects to ship by the end of the year. Cool is still in the planning stages, he said, and Microsoft is soliciting feedback from software developers. He also disputed reports that the company would stop developing its J++ product, a Java development tool. Visual C++ is a development tool for the Windows operating system. In contrast, software developers can use Sun's Java to write programs that run on multiple operating systems. Recent articles in PC Week Online quoted anonymous Microsoft insiders and software developers describing Cool as a competitor to Java. The articles also said different groups within Microsoft are fighting over Cool's direction.
