[Sprint stock up on report of rumored BellSouth tie]

NEW YORK, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Shares of Sprint Corp. jumped more than 5 percent after a report of rumors on Wall Street about a possible tie-up between the long distance carrier and local phone service provider BellSouth Corp. (NYSE:BLS), a Baby Bell.

Barron's, a weekly financial newspaper, said spokesmen at both firms would not comment. But it said a merger would give BellSouth, a local phone service, the chance to offer long-distance and cellular service and the "one-stop-shopping" many phone companies are aiming for.

The report quoted two people, who had heard the rumors, as saying Sprint shares could fetch between $100 and $115 a share. One stumbling block could be regulatory approval, Barron's said.

Sprint shares jumped 4-1/8 to 85-7/8 and touched a new 52-week high to 86-7/8. Robert Wilkes, a telecom analyst with Brown Brothers Harriman, tied the stock rise to the story.

BellSouth shares were also higher, up 2-1/16 at 47-3/8.
