Well the real problem IMO is that they get away with what they get away with mostly because of the way American culture always wants a new drug. Kind of like the Huey Louis song "I Want a New Drug".

Most Americans want to believe in a pill for a solution to their problems. If some day the big drug companies no longer are allowed to influence the brain washing of American doctors beginning at the level of medical school, the doctors will spend more time stressing the importance of good preventative health over writing a prescription for some pill as a quick fix for a problem that could have been avoided in the first place.

I wonder how much money it would cost the big drug companies if American medical community really stressed good preventative health over pill pushing. It really is a very simple plan and the big drug companies don't get rich in the process:

1)Don't smoke.
2)Don't consume excessive amounts of alcohol.
3)Get adequate exercise on a regular basis.
4)Identify major stresses in life and either eliminate them if possible or if not possible learn how to effectively minimize their influences. This may be as simple as using public transportation if being caught in traffic stresses a person out or not working as hard as some workaholics work and taking more time off.
5)Healthy diet.

Pretty simple stuff yet these points are constantly ignored. Probably because they are all too obvious. Many people go to the doctor's office wanting the quick fix via a pill. Many would be pissed to to be lectured on the above points as opposed to getting a prescription. Too much focus on a quick cure for the symptoms rather than focusing on the underlying causes. Too bad for the patient.
