Vodafone Will Help End> Vodafone merger 'will end US mobiles dispute' The Times of London THE Pounds 67 billion merger of Vodafone and AirTouch, the mobile phone companies, will help to end the fierce dispute between the European Union and the US over the technical standards of so-called "third-generation" mobile phones, it was claimed yesterday. The prediction was made by executives from Qualcomm, the US mobile phone handset manufacturer. It has played a leading role in the dispute, and has threatened to sue its European rivals over the issue. The executives, who were visiting London as part of a charm offensive aimed at government officials and City analysts, said that the transatlantic Vodafone AirTouch merger had already helped to bring together officials from the British and American governments. Two successful meetings have already been held in Beijing and Washington, with another set to take place in Brazil in two weeks' time. The US had previously accused the EU of ploughing ahead with plans for a technological standard that would be incompatible with the standard used in the US, thus freezing American companies out of a hugely lucrative market. At the same time, Qualcomm, which pioneered the technical standard used in the US, threatened to sue its European rivals, because their standard would use of some of its patented technology. However, William Bold, vice-president of government affairs at Qualcomm, said yesterday: "We certainly don't see that (legal threat) as being necessary, because the carriers (Vodafone AirTouch and others) have taken control of the issue. We're confident there will be a single standard for both networks." (Copyright Times Newspapers Ltd, 1999)
