Their intelligence, although overrated, is real enough, but they are shallow. They lack a sufficient degree of mental cultivation, and are not given to reflection. I had a friend in college who was attracted to the political life. I told him that he should not pursue it, that he was too ambitious for the mere outward accoutrements, and that it would be harmful to his soul. He worked on the Hill for awhile, and found it so disillusioning that he went into business, to my relief. These guys are like my friend, attracted to politics for too many of the wrong reasons, especially vanity, and it is truly bad for them.
