I think it's too early to short the record companies, but it would be a possibility in a year or two. The buzz word for the internet is "disintermediation", and mp3 has the potential to disintermediate the record companies out of business.

shorting the record companies looks dangerous because many of these companies are huge congolmerates with movies, cable, broadcast, video and publishing assets --

i think the record companies have to buy into mp3 (or its successor) to maintain their hold on the music industry

if they don't i think that rather than short music stocks -- look for the merging mp3 winners

mp3.com (private)
winamp (private
diamond multimedia (public but how long before sony gets in this space?)
realnetworks (maybe)
the portals (since they have users)
