Excite pulls porn off kiddie-friendly search engine
Leading portal Excite has plugged the loophole that allowed explicit pornographic ads to be published on one of its child-friendly filtered search engines.

Yesterday, Excite bowed to pressure from family-values pressure groups to stop the porn appearing on its Magellan Web site despite its "Green Light" filtering software being activated.

The embarrassing faux pas was uncovered following an investigation by The Register and could still lead to a formal inquiry by the US government's Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Soon after it was reported by The Register, the problem was covered by news services across the world - even appearing on the front page of theNew York Times - increasing the pressure on Excite to put things right.

Excite has tried to play down the issue and has been quoted as saying that it was noting more than an "oversight".

But the company's apparent ambivalence to the issue of children being exposed to pornography in this manner has angered some people.

Parry Aftab, cyberspace lawyer and executive director of CyberAngels, the Net's largest online safety and education programme, was so incensed by Excite's reaction she immediately reported the company to the FTC.

No one from Excite was available for comment before this story went to press.
