INTERVIEW-Compaq<CPQ.N>sees Asia enterprise growth SINGAPORE, Feb 22 (Reuters) - U.S.-based Compaq Computer Corp sees growth in the Asia-Pacific region for its enterprise computing group, a senior official said on Monday. "Going forward this year, we see definite growth," Compaq's director of enterprise computing for the Asia-Pacific region, Saroj Suraweera, told Reuters in an interview. "I think it is pretty early to say what the growth would be, but I would say if we don't achieve a 15 percent growth, we would not be satisfied," he said. Asked if 15 percent was consistent with industry growth expectations, Suraweera said he was not aware of the latest industry figures. "Compaq always tries to grow faster," he said. "At least twice the market growth." The enterprise computing group produced 35 percent of Compaq's total sales of $31.17 billion for 1998 and 36 percent of sales from the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The region accounted for about five percent of the computer giant's global revenue in 1998. Suraweera said Internet-based computing offered huge opportunities, especially for emerging entrepreneurs. "Once the Y2K issues are over, I personally believe people would move to the next wave of computing," he said, referring to Internet-based computing. "All entrepreneurs have a great chance of getting into this new wave," Suraweera said, citing online retailer Amazon.com <AMZN.O> as an example.
