Bob (off topic),

I still want to see a shuttle launch (a night launch would be great). It you go down there, remember that the best viewing is from a state park at Cape Canaveral. The tour at the Kennedy Space Center is worth taking.

Yes, I meant small wing extensions or swept wing shaped body. I would think that a winged launch vehicle with an X33-like orbiter and reentry vehicle riding piggy-back would be a good design. The launch vehicle could take the orbiter into the upper stratosphere and up to about mach 8 to mach 10. It could then release the orbiter for near zero air resistance acceleration up to escape velocity. Both vehicles would be landable and reusable.
I've never looked at ORB. Thanks for the links. Also check

Did you hear about the four telescope optical interferometer that the Europeans are building in the northern Chilean mountains? It will have ten times the resolution of Hubble (and, of course, much greater light gathering ability). We'll be able to see the back of our heads with that scope!

Pravin.
