FWIW: Computer markets in Asia:Asia-Pacific PC shipments up a record 11% in Q4 1998 By Raju Chellam IDC says units shipped in Q4 are highest total ever for regional PC market [SINGAPORE] The Asia-Pacific markets saw record shipments of 2.89 million units during the quarter ended December 1998, which is the highest total ever for the regional PC markets, according a preliminary survey by researcher International Data Corp (IDC). "Fourth quarter PC shipments in Asia-Pac increased 7 per cent over Q4 1997 and over 11 per cent from Q3 1998, signalling a rebound in many regional markets as shipments increased for the first time in 1998," IDC director for computing systems for Asia-Pacific Dane Anderson told BusinessIT. "This year, IDC forecasts the regional market to recover with an annual shipment growth of over 14 per cent in unit terms." In revenue terms, the Asia-Pacific shipped PCs worth US$4.20 billion (S$7.1 billion) in Q4 1998, down 5.19 per cent from Q4 1997. For the full year, shipments in 1998 were worth US$14.77 billion, down 22.67 per cent from 1997, due to price erosion. Volume-wise, 10.47 million PCs were shipped in a dozen key markets in the Asia-Pacific, down a marginal 0.6 per cent over 1997. "If market conditions in China, India and Australia remain healthy, the regional PC market should generate solid gains in 1999, producing the highest annual shipment total to date in this region," said Kitty Fok, Hongkong-based research manager at IDC Asia-Pacific. The four markets that showed the highest year-on-year growth were India, with 31.5 per cent; China, 29.5 per cent; Australia, 11.8 per cent; and Taiwan, 8 per cent. The four markets that showed the most decline in the period were Indonesia, down 81.1 per cent; Thailand, 40.5 per cent; South Korea, 34.3 per cent, and Malaysia, 26.4 per cent. Singapore saw shipments of 332,000 units in 1998, down 10.2 per cent from 1997. Singapore's share in the Asia-Pacific PC shipment pie dropped from 3.5 per cent in 1997, to 3.2 per cent in 1998. Malaysia shipped 396,000 units in 1998, and its share dropped from 5.1 per cent to 3.8 per cent. The three giant markets that dominate the regional PC markets are China, which accounts for 37.5 per cent of all PCs shipped in the region; Australia, 16.2 per cent; and South Korea, 11.7 per cent. IDC said Compaq Computer led the market with 8.5 per cent market share in units shipped for 1998. IBM followed with 8.1 per cent, while Hewlett-Packard and China's Legend tied for third place with 5.4 per cent each. Acer was fourth with 4.7 per cent. "The greatest gains in 1998 were by Legend and Dell, with annual shipment increases of 73.4 per cent and 45.9 per cent respectively," Mr Anderson said. "Legend's growth was fuelled by China's leap in PC demand; Dell's gains was because its direct marketing model gained acceptance in many Asian markets." In Singapore, Compaq Computer led the market last year with 22.8 per cent market share in units shipped, followed by HP's 16.8 per cent, Acer's 9.7 per cent, and IBM's 8.8 per cent. In Malaysia, the leader was Acer with 10 per cent market share, followed by Dell Computer with 7.8 per cent; Compaq, 6.3 per cent; and HP, 5.8 per cent. The Business Times 15/02/1999
