Gentner Communications Corporation Introduces New Venture(TM) Series of Assistive Listening Systems for Tour Audio, Language Translation
PR Newswire - February 22, 1999 07:14

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Gentner Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: GTNR) today introduced Venture(TM) -- its newest series of assistive listening system (ALS) products designed specifically for tour audio and language translation applications. Venture is now available for shipment.

The Venture series consists of transmitters and receivers that use a wide area FM signal to provide maximum voice intelligibility in virtually any environment. Unlike infrared systems, Venture has no line-of-sight restrictions and can operate outdoors and in other bright-light settings.

Venture operates in the 216 MHz frequency range. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently approved this frequency for use in hearing assistance applications that are not specifically designed for the hearing impaired. Being first in the industry to provide transmitters and receivers that operate in the 216 MHz range is further evidence of Gentner's dedication to providing leading-edge technology for the ALS market.

Venture's transmitters -- the Base (stationary) and the Express (portable) -- have 19 available channels, enabling multiple transmitters to be used in one location. Venture's receivers use a digital tuning processor to ensure that they stay locked-on to a particular frequency, despite rough handling or changes in humidity and temperature. The Venture-1 receiver can be preset to receive any of the transmitter's 19 channels, while the Venture-6, as the name implies, enables the user to switch between up to six preset channels.

"While assistive listening systems are well recognized for providing amplified audio for the hearing impaired in such public places as schools, churches and theaters, potential uses extend far beyond those markets," said Bruce Davis, ALS product manager for Gentner. "Tour groups and multi-lingual training applications represent two relatively new markets for ALS, and we are confident they will prove successful going forward."

Tour Audio Applications

Using a portable transmitter equipped with a headset microphone, tour guides can speak in normal tones and still be heard over background noise. The guide's audio signal is transmitted directly to portable receivers worn by each member of the tour group. This eliminates the need for a megaphone or public address system. Conversely, if the setting dictates, the guide can also speak in whispers and still be heard.

Language Translation Applications

Gentner's Venture products also facilitate training in multi-lingual settings. The system's multiple-channel configuration allows instructors and translators to speak simultaneously, yet be heard individually, depending on which channel the audience's receivers are set to.
