I have also been trying to find an approach to making some $$$ through the mp3 craze.

Currently there is a battle ensuing to provide the technology that can help the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) set the "standard."

E-Digital (EDIG) is partnering with Lucent Technologies in Lucent's efforts to have their technology adopted by the RIAA. EDIG's "solid state player" is currently being used in conjunction with Lucent's EPAC technology that provides the security and compression rate that the RIAA may be looking for (EDIG is also doing some work with Intel).

In addition, EDIG has a deal signed with Lanier--it's worth $4 million for the first order (and they are looking at 10-12 million annually).

Here are some links you may be interested in if you're reading through this (so far) fairly paltry thread.

There is a si thread dedicated to the Rio mp3 portable skipless music player made by Diamond Multimedia (NASDAQ DIMD).
Subject 22861

One of the interesting links on this thread is this article about the growing popularity of the format with generation X and Y
sfgate.com

Here is information about the Rio and other players from mp3.com
mp3.com

Would I pay big $ for a portable player that would receive real time mp3 quality broadcasts too? You bet I would... Check shoutcast.com to see the beginnings (currently wired only - Nextel phones will be the first wireless vendor perhaps?!) of this movement in action. Nullsoft is behind this project and the gold standard of pc mp3 players, Winamp. nullsoft.com

Anyway, please share your opinions about the future of mp3!
