Unisys and ONTOS Ally to Develop Simplified Migration Process to Multi-Tier Environments for Financial Services
ONTOS solution streamlines integration of data and component development
BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 1999-- Unisys Corporation, a premier provider of solutions to the global financial marketplace, announced today that it has selected the ONTOS*Integrator Development Tool and related services from ONTOS, Inc. to assist in developing Unisys financial solutions for the Microsoft Windows NT environment.

ONTOS is a leading provider of component-based application development solutions.

Unisys will strengthen its financial services application development effort by using the ONTOS solution to create and generate components that allow applications to access corporate data in multi-tier environments.

Expected benefits for the development lifecycle include improved time to market in delivering products and services to customers, lower project risks, increased productivity, and reduced total cost of ownership. Initially, Unisys software developers will use the solution and professional services to implement the pre-defined components in existing Unisys financial applications.

''Our objective is to continually improve our information technology infrastructure to the point where we can provide information to anyone, anywhere, at anytime,'' said Greg Barnowsky, manager, Worldwide Financial Services, Unisys Corporation.

''To accomplish this goal, we must re-architect some IT infrastructures, make them more flexible and powerful. The ONTOS* Integrator will help us streamline much of the component development process so developers can focus more resources on mission-critical business object development and speed the migration from two-tier to multi-tier environments.''

''The ONTOS solution solves a difficult and costly problem common to many development organizations,'' said Ken Lord, marketing director, ONTOS, Inc. ''Bottom-line, the decision faced by many CIOs comes down to 'build vs. buy.'

ONTOS' relationship with Unisys is further proof that the ONTOS product-driven solution, combined with our goal of quickly moving our partners and clients to self-sufficiency, makes the 'build vs. buy' decision less risky. This decision is no longer strictly a technical question but, instead, a business issue that will affect the growth and success of an organization.''

''The combination of ONTOS and Unisys means the marketplace now has another option to the 'build vs. buy' paradigm,'' said John Grispon, Microsoft's worldwide banking industry manager. ''Their alliance will help financial institutions more easily migrate to the Microsoft Windows DNAfs framework, which allows them to truly integrate their computer systems and better serve their customers.''

About the ONTOS solution

ONTOS delivers its solution through a combination of proven processes, products and industry-leading services. The product, ONTOS* Integrator, includes the ONTOS*Integrator Development Tool, generating high-performance Data Components, and the ONTOS*Integrator Data Component Server.

ONTOS Data Components provide the bridge between COM-based applications, the Microsoft industry-leading standard for developing applications, and back-end databases.

The ONTOS solution is automatic and faster than traditional hand coding. The Data Components generated by ONTOS*Integrator represent tens of thousands of lines of tested and verified code. As COM components, they are accessible from development tools such as Visual Basic, C++ or Java, saving the expense of specialized training for staff.

In addition, with the ONTOS solution, highly skilled, experienced programmers can avoid complex, mundane hand-coding of data access routines, freeing them to focus instead on their organization's business objectives.

ONTOS services provide companies with both an up-front risk assessment and a real-time solution that validates project requirements and architecture.

Through the transfer of knowledge, the ONTOS Professional Services Group collaborates with organizations to help them secure the skills necessary to successfully incorporate Data Components into their application.

The results are an extensible software framework and an efficient skills transfer that allow organizations to become self-sufficient for their immediate project, as well as future projects.
