Frost and Sullivan Ranks Lucent
Technologies as the DWDM Market Leader

Lucent Introduces New DWDM Solution for Metropolitan Area Networks

MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 1999--Lucent Technologies is the leading
provider of Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems in the United States according
to Frost and Sullivan, a leading market research firm. According to the upcoming report, Lucent
has the largest market share - 30 percent - of the $1.6 billion DWDM equipment market.

''Lucent delivers leading-edge DWDM products, and its customers know that Lucent has the
products and the expertise to provide the bandwidth and network management that carriers need
to meet the rising demand for voice and data services,'' said Erica Henkel, Industry Analyst with
Frost and Sullivan.

''Frost and Sullivan's report reaffirms Lucent's position as the leader in DWDM. With
innovative solutions that include the WaveStar(tm) OLS 400G, which is our high-capacity
80-channel DWDM system, the WaveStar Bandwidth Manager and the new metro DWDM
system we're announcing today, Lucent is helping our customers meet their business needs,'' said
Gerry Butters, Group President, Lucent Technologies Optical Networking Group. ''With today's
announcement of our WaveStar AllMetro(tm) solution, we offer our customers the most complete
DWDM portfolio in the industry.''

Lucent's new WaveStar AllMetro series of optical networking equipment (see separate

percent equipment cost savings. The products transmit data up to 10 times the speed of today's
Local Area Networks and offer 40 times the capacity of traditional transport systems.

The WaveStar AllMetro is the latest addition to Lucent's growing DWDM business. The
company has deployed nearly 2,000 DWDM systems to customers worldwide, more than any
other vendor.
