More good news: The big Japanese contract that Nettles hinted at. $20 million, mostly booked in Q1, but with prospects for even more later this year (calling the project in its "first phase"). If the San Diego OFC convention yields some more good news and good feelings, Ciena is going to burst through $25. I don't know about you, but I'll nearing my break-even point on this investment.

Crosswave Selects Ciena's DWDM Products
for Japan's Newest Optical Network
Infrastructure

Japan's Newest Carrier Unveils Plans To Offer High-Speed Network

Services

CIENA Corporation (Nasdaq: CIEN) today announced that Tokyo-based
Crosswave Communications Inc. has selected CIENA's MultiWave
Sentry(TM) 4000 dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) products
for Crosswave's new optical networking infrastructure. CIENA has received
orders for and shipped approximately $20 million worth of equipment and
services for the first phase of the project a large portion of which was
recognized as revenue during CIENA's first fiscal quarter. This is CIENA's
fifth, and one of its largest, announced customers in Japan.

Crosswave Communications, formed by Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ), the
largest Japanese Internet Service Provider (ISP), in partnership with Toyota
Motor Corporation and Sony Corporation, has begun construction of a
nationwide optical network. Crosswave's network is designed to have 100
Gbps capacity at the beginning and offer up to 600 Mbps service, the fastest in
Japan. This new platform frees customers from bandwidth and distance
limitations found in other network architectures. Services will begin in April in
the Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Hokuriku area, and will reach all of Japan by
March, 2000.

"We chose CIENA's MultiWave Sentry because it is a proven, high-capacity
system that could meet our aggressive deployment schedule," said Koichi
Suzuki, president and chief executive officer of Crosswave Communications.
"CIENA's products provide Crosswave with bandwidth on demand to rapidly
grow our network and the open architecture provides us the flexibility to offer
a variety of data services directly over DWDM."

"Crosswave's decision to use our DWDM technology as well as the
acceptance of an open-architecture further validates CIENA's vision of optical
networking," said Gary Smith, CIENA's senior vice president of worldwide
sales. "New competitive carriers, such as Crosswave, understand the
economics of building a simplified network focused on the high-growth market
of Internet and data services."

In the past six months, CIENA has focused its efforts on expanding its
international customer base specifically targeting competitive carriers. As a
result of the growth in Internet/data worldwide, CIENA's international business
now accounts for over 40 percent of the revenue.
