The Dreaded Restricted List
By James J. Cramer

That's it! I'm putting this *&%(*^%*&% Hewlett-Packard
(HWP:NYSE) on my personal restricted list. There are only so many
times that one stock can make a fool of someone, and this one has
crossed that threshold.

You remember two weeks ago when I sold Hewlett because of the
groupthink that SCI Systems' shortfall (SCI:NYSE) should hurt it, and
then I bought it back when I thought the news was fully discounted.

I waited until it was up today and sold the balance. A brutal loss, one
that can be measured in the six figures. And now I have to watch as
the stock moves up 5 points on rumors that Lew Platt, the guy who
runs the company, might be out.

Some stocks are like that. Years ago I had Federal Express, now
part of FDX (FDX:NYSE), on my restricted list because everything I
did in the name was wrong. Then later it was AMR (AMR:NYSE). Last
year I took a bath in Ascend (ASND:Nasdaq) and stayed away for
almost six months, refusing to trade it, before it got to some level that I
was willing to violate my personal restricted for.

Today Hewlett-Packard goes on the list. Not until Platt is gone will you
see me own a share of this one. It has beaten me too many times.

Random musings: NDX up 50 as I write this. Could it be that the
mutual fund bandits walk it up to 75 by the end of the day? Hubba,
hubba, nothing would shock me.
