Motorola inks processing pact with Chartered, foundry's fab with HP Story posted 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m., PST, 2/22/99 By J. Robert Lineback semibiznews.com AUSTIN, Tex. -- Motorola Inc.'s Semiconductor Products Sector today announced a strategic technology alliance with Singapore Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd. and a joint-venture between the Singapore foundry company and its partner, Hewlett-Packard Co. Under the agreement Chartered and the joint-venture foundry will gain access to Motorola's advanced CMOS processes, starting at 0.18-micron drawn feature sizes and copper interconnect technology. Under the agreement, Motorola will use the Chartered Silicon Partners joint venture fab for products as part of its strategy to outsource about 50% of its wafer processing needs by 2002. The move follows a similar alliance announced last week with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (see Feb. 17 story). Motorola will license its HiPerMOS technology, beginning at the 0.18-micron (0.15-micron L-effective) generation and continue for two more generations, company officials said today. The technology will also include Motorola's copper interconnect processes and low-k dielectric insulators which are expected to be used in the next couple of generations. "We are making this move to help create a standard for copper processing and other advanced technologies," said Jim George, corporate vice president and director of global strategies, based in Austin. In addition to using Chartered and the joint-venture fab for products, Motorola will collect a royalty for products made with its HiPerMOS technology.
