Bill Gates Sees Internet Conquering The Classroom

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) Chairman Bill Gates predicted Monday that all American teachers will be using the Internet and electronic mail as part of their classroom instruction within three years.

Gates, addressing the annual convention of the American Association of School Administrators in New Orleans, cited a 1998 survey showing that in 36 percent of U.S. schools a majority of the teachers were already using e-mail.

However, in 41 percent of U.S. schools none of the teachers were using e-mail, according to the same survey.

Similarly while 14 percent of schools reported that most of their teachers used the Internet for classroom instruction, 23 percent said the Internet was not used for teaching at all.

Gates told the audience that computers must become an integral part of the teaching of all course work.

''Learning computer technology should not be a subject on its own, isolated from other subjects,'' he said.

Instead, computer training should be integrated into all other course work, from science to history.

Students using computers as a research and work tool in school will find themselves better prepared for college and for jobs when they graduate from high school, Gates said.
