RedHat Linux does a great job of detecting hardware for a basic installation. I recently installed it on an old P90 I have over in the corner and was surprised at how well the setup program did. It does far better than NT 4 which is what I run on my main machine. This is purely setup-based support. It isn't plug & play, but still, is very impressive.

RedHat isn't as far along with hardware support for the windowing system. I've had to muck around a bit more to get that running. Their setup is clearly optimized now to give the primary users -- server farms -- a quick and easy command-line setup.

Microsoft would love to have the court believe that that is enough to represent a major threat to the desktop OS market. But it isn't. This isn't close to being a threat to the consumer/business desktop. It is interesting, though, that Microsoft's trial-related promotion of Linux seems to be snowballing a bit. As Microsoft mentions it, more and more publications that ignored Linux for years are taking a serious look at the system. It will be impossible for Microsoft to put this PR trick back into the bag after the trial.

Windows 2000?

You mean Snake Oil 2000?

Where in the world can you buy a copy of that? Beta versions. Gee, how does MSFT make money on BETA versions?

More vaporware. Yeah, don't worry ours will do that ... next year. I guess Active Directory is better than Novell's NDS. Wait a minute. I can't BUY Active Directory.

Microsoft is still trying to deliver a stable operating system. They may have enough money now to continue forcing Windows on the ignorant masses. I wouldn't short their stock.

If you want to compare VaporWare let's discuss Linux on Merced. Hardware support? Where's Windows for Sparq and Alpha chips?

I've used Windows for years. I'm tired of rebooting.

Try Linux ... you'll like it.

Plug and Play

RE: "I have a 3DFX Voodoo 2 card with 12 megs, an 8.2 gig IDE drive, two SCSI hard drives, a ZIP drive, a DVD drive, 96 megs of ram, and an LCD monitor, plus and older laser jet printer and a new 56K modem. Windows 98 detected all of this on its own, no effort on my part."

Windows falls a bit short in the plug and play arena. If you stick in something as simple as a floppy disk, nothing happens. The Windows OS is too stupid to know what to do with it.

The poor user has to manually mount it on the desk top by hunting down the port it is likely to be connected to.

Other operating systems have been doing right by users going on 15 years.

Hal

PS: I think it's good advice not to fall in love with any stock. IMHO, MSFT is for buying and selling, not personal computing. Lets make some bucks. :-)
