I found out their in-store inventory terminals run on Windows3.1 and that they aren't "bullet-proofed" to allow them to be free for customers to use.

I still say that if you give customers in the store the same tools that Amazon gives them at-home, people would be more likely to both (a) hang out in the stores and (2)order on the Web, assuming that they use a common web application. And, for heavens sake, give people the ability to check out their own books. There's already security tags on everthing anyway, it's not like someone's going to sneak out of the store with something any more easily.
